Oregon State University celebrates its 147th Commencement at 10:30 a.m. in Reser Stadium. Gates open at 9 a.m., and tickets are not required. This year’s speaker is U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera. http://oregonstate.edu/events/commencement/.

Recurring Events

OSU students who are completing their bachelor of fine arts degrees will present their thesis work May 31 through June 12 in the Fairbanks Gallery. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. June 11 and June 12. The exhibits are free and open to the public.

Art faculty Anna Fidler will exhibit her work at Artworks CEI this month with an opening during the Corvallis Art Walk. The title of her exhibit is Telepathy Quilt and Two Stars, and runs from May 19 – June 10 at 408 SW Monroe Avenue|161, Corvallis.

Yuji Hiratsuka exhibit “Conversation Pieces,” The Little Gallery, 210 Kidder Hall.  The artist, Yuji Hiratsuka is a professor of  printmaking at Oregon State University. The show will run April 25-June 10.  Gallery hours:  M-F, 8-5 (closed during the lunch hour).


CLA This Week will continue to be published throughout the summer on a semi-regular basis. Submissions that are not time-sensitive will be batched together and published when a substantial number have been sent.

Current Research, Publications and Creative Activity

Associate Professor in the School of Language, Culture and Society Sebastian Heiduschke’s monograph East German Cinema: DEFA and Film History will appear in Japanese translation with Choeisha Co. Ltd., a publisher based in Osaka, Japan.

Instructor of music Dana Reason performed at the Improvisation Summit of Portland Festival on Saturday, June 4 in an ensemble lead by Cal Arts music faculty member Vinny Golia. Golia was named by Jazziz Magazine as one of the “100 people who have influenced the course of jazz in our century.”

Instructor of audio production Mike Gamble performed last Thursday and Saturday evening at the Improvisation Summit of Portland. Gamble will be taking over as the artistic director of the festival which features the best in creative, improvised and experimental music in collaboration with dancers, film and other artists.
